Books to Read with the Kids

Nighttime reading is one of my favourite things. Of the 5200 days that I’ve been a dad, I’ve read with the kids nearly 4000 of them (give or take a few hundred). Furthermore, we have a niche: epic sci-fi and fantasy adventure series.

Here’s my list of the best books to read with kids. These are in no particular order, and as review posts of each become available, the links will be updated here.

We’ve had a LOT of fun with these, and hopefully you will too :)

Best Epic Sci-Fi Fantasy Series

  • Harry Potter
  • Lord of the Rings (& The Hobbit)
  • Series of Unfortunate Events
  • Ender’s Game
  • Mistborn
  • Broken Earth
  • Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
  • Kings of the Wyld
  • Greenglass House
  • Spiderwick Chronicles
  • Nevermoor Series

Honourable Mention

The Sprawl (Neuromancer)

This is the classic dystopian sci-fi but it was not quite as compelling for our kids.

Wrinkle in Time

Pretty good but somehow the series started to peter out for us.

Chronicles of Narnia

Another classic but the protagonists seemed to have their challenges overcome on their behalf by Aslan, making it somewhat less inspiring. We didn’t finish the series yet though.

Neverending Story

If this was a series it’d be among the best. Great writing, great classic parable, rich with poignant peeks into the human psyche.

Want to Read

  • Foundation Trilogy
  • Song of Ice and Fire (way too violent for kids?)

Other Genres and Singletons

These might have to go in a separate list post in the future but jotting them down here for memory. This is a living document and will change anyways.

Roald Dahl

Everything written by Roald Dahl is an exceptional piece of literature, and sets an unreachable bar for all others who attempt to follow his footsteps.

Dr. Seuss

There’s nothing in the world like Dr. Seuss. The kids are teenagers and we still love to read “Fox in Sox” LOL!

Clementine Series

A really sweet character and stories.

Raina Telgemeier

All her books are skillfully drawn. Wildly popular, for good reason.

Svetlana Chmakova

My mind was blown by these modern parables in graphic-novel format.
